Why we made it
rank.engineer is our attempt to bring some meritocracy to engineering: a place where engineers are ranked by what they've built, not by where they went to school or who they know. The robot in your garage, the library other people depend on, the paper, the hackathon win. That's what counts here.
How it works
Everyone starts at 800, like a chess rating. Every project, role, paper, merged pull request and award adds points, and every 200 points is a class, from Class E all the way up to Senior Master.
The details are in how the rating works, above the leaderboard.
We know it's not perfect
One number can't capture everything an engineer is good at. The rating only sees what's been published, it's worked out by software, and it will sometimes miss things or get them wrong. Great work that's private, under NDA or never written up won't show. We're treating it as an experiment and changing it as we learn. If something about you is wrong, write to privacy@rank.engineer and we'll fix it, or take you off the board.
Mostly, it's meant to be fun
We want to highlight great engineers and the things they've made, in a way that's more fun than a stack of résumés: climbing a class, seeing who's building right now, finding a project you didn't know existed. If you're on the board, you've built something worth seeing.
Who's behind it
rank.engineer is an experiment by BracketBot. Everyone on the board applied to BracketBot and chose to be on it, and for now only people we've invited can see it.
